- 4 soft hamburger buns
- 4 slices of American cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
- Preheat the grill or skillet over medium-high heat (about 400°F).
- Divide ground beef into four loose balls (about 4 ounces each).
- Place each ball on the hot surface and smash down to about half an inch thick.
- Season with salt and pepper; cook for 3 minutes until browned.
- Flip patties, adding cheese during the last minute of cooking.
- Toast buns until golden brown.
- Assemble burgers by placing cooked patties on buns and adding desired toppings.
