Method
Prepare the Dough
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a stand mixer, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl.
- Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shape the Bagels
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a ball and then poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape. Stretch the hole to about 1-2 inches.
- Place shaped bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Boil the Bagels
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add honey.
- Boil each bagel for about 1 minute on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon and return to the baking sheet.
- If desired, sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds while still wet.
Bake the Bagels
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
Bagels can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
